Bustling Castlefield boozer the White Lion is officially back open for business after an extensive refurbishment.

The historic pub has proven to be a huge hit with football fans over the years and, as a result, has earned itself a handsome reputation in the area.

But its history goes further back than Manchester United’s match days; the pub stands right in the middle of the old ruins of Mamucium, a former Roman fort and the first accurate record of human settlement in Manchester.

It is believed that Mamucium was built all the way back in 79AD upon a rocky outcrop protected by the Rivers Irwell and Medlock. There, it was the perfect spot for defending the surrounding roads and cities leading to Chester and York.

However, just a couple of hundred years later in 410AD, Mamucium was abandoned and a village was gradually built around it, with the area eventually being redeveloped and renamed Castlefield in the 1980s.

Okay, I have to confess that the White Lion arrived hundreds of years after Mamucium’s glory years – but it was built directly upon its ruins, meaning punters can sit back and sup their pints in the very spot brutal Roman battles took place.

Now that’s definitely something not every pub can say, isn’t it?

And, while the White Lion has just undergone a renovation, it has managed to hold on to its historical charm with a traditional fireplace, iconic wooden furniture and those patterned carpets seen in every proper boozer up and down the country.

Alongside its historic beer garden, the White Lion also boasts open mic nights, live entertainment and, of course, TV screens for those all-important match days.

Guests can also grab a bite from their food menu, which features all those pub grub classics, as well as a number of alcoholic beverages and pints on draught.
