We love a good Sunday roast up North, they’re a regional culinary institution and nowhere is that more true than here in Greater Manchester. And we’re fussy when it comes to roasts: The Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes have to be spot on, accompanied by lashings of gravy, and the meat needs to be cooked to perfection. But what is the best meat for a Sunday roast? Well, how about fried chicken…

That’s exactly what one Northern Quarter establishment is offering, and the idea of a fried chicken roast dinner is getting us very excited. Kong’s Chicken Shop is serving up the new creation using chicken thigh which has been brined for three hours, before being rolled in a secret spice mix, and double-dredged to make it even crispier. The dinner comes complete with a giant Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, sweet potato mash, veg, Kong’s signature fried chicken thigh and crispy fried chicken skin ‘crackling’, all covered in chicken gravy.

After a successful first weekend, the fried chicken roast was such a hit that it will be returning this Sunday, August 8th, although sadly there will only be limited numbers available.
Kong’s took to social media to share the news, writing: “Don’t know if you heard but we dropped a fried chicken roast yesterday. A lot of you have been asking if we’ll do it again next Sunday…
“Well, we are yeah! Obviously! And hopefully every Sunday maybe forever?
“If you’ve been following up from our humble beginnings as a collection pop-up at CBRB you might remember that we asked you to pre order and book a time slot through our DM’s.
“If you want to secure a roast on Sunday, drop us a DM with what you’d like and if it’s a chicken or veggie! Walk-ins will be available but we’re only doing very limited numbers so if you don’t wanna chance it slide into those DMs.”

Kong’s Chicken Shop began life as a pop-up at Cocktail Beer Ramen + Bun (CBRB), and is now operating out of Northern Monk’s kitchen on weekends. They’re also doing their regular menu across the weekend, but if it’s a fried chicken Sunday roast you’re after you’ll have to drop them a message to make sure there’s spots left – you can get in touch on their Instagram here.
