A huge fire erupted on Blackpool’s Central Pier in the early hours of this morning, needing around 50 firefighters to tackle it.

The iconic tourist attraction saw a huge blaze at around 3am this morning, and Fire and Rescue are currently investigating the cause.

Incident commander Mark Winder from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire involved a workshop and a ride that are approximately halfway along the Central Pier.

“Fortunately early firefighter action has extinguished the fire to the extent there is no visible flame present.”

The fire service tweeted photos which showed the pier engulfed with flames, with the height of the blaze requiring 10 fire engines.

The fire was reported in the early hours and on arrival, firefighters requested further assistance with a further eight fire engines being called to attend.

Roads were closed for around two hours surrounding the central pier which is around 550 yards south of Blackpool Tower.

Many people have expressed their condolences on Twitter with one user writing: “very sad scenes in Blackpool this morning. Central Pier on fire. Hope it’s not damaged beyond repair “
