There’s good news for Asda staff, as it’s been announced the company’s stores won’t open on Boxing Day. On top of that, many colleagues will also get a big Christmas bonus after what has been a tough year for supermarket and retail workers. Asda has joined M&S, Aldi and Home Bargains in shutting stores for an extra day over the busy festive season to give staff a well-deserved break.

CEO Roger Burnley told staff: “This is of course our busiest time of year. “But it was important for us to give as many of you as possible the opportunity to spend this time with those loved ones that you may not have not seen for many months so, uniquely for this year, we will not reopen our stores until December 27th.” This means all 631 of the supermarket’s stores will close for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and staff who were contracted to work on Boxing Day will still be paid for the shift. All eligible hourly-paid workers, who’ve been on the frontline this year, will also get a guaranteed 100% bonus. Asda will shut at 7pm on Christmas Eve, so you best not leave your shopping too late.
