The family of Ellie Horrocks are ‘overjoyed’ she has returned to the UK after a horror crash left her in a coma.

Ellie, 22, from Westhoughton was involved in the horror accident after she swerved to avoid an oncoming car, causing her buggy to overturn, on June 26th, while she was taking a trip to the other side of the island to watch the sunset.

She was rushed to Nicosia Hospital on the resort of Ayia Napa in Cyprus, where they placed her into a medically induced coma after she suffered a serious head injury as well as fractures to her spinal cord and clavicle.

Her auntie Sarah Horrocks says the hospital managed to ‘save Ellie’s life’. Sarah says her niece is now being assessed to see what treatment she needs.

Sarah said: “We are really pleased that she is in the UK because she can see her family and friends and we hope it can aid her recovery.

“She is being assessed and we believe it is a long road to recovery, but we don’t know until she has been assessed, so we will wait and see what happens.

“She is out of her coma now and has come quite a way in a week.

“The hospital [Nicosia Hospital] were amazing with her and they basically saved her life.”

Sarah says that while the family are remaining positive, they are still in some ‘shock’ and are ‘upset’ by the whole ordeal, adding: “It has had a huge impact. Now we are focusing on Ellie getting better.”

Ellie’s mum, Leaane Horrocks, set up a Go Fund Me page to raise the cash to fly her daughter back to the UK for further treatment and to be around her family and friends which will help her on the road to recovery.

The family managed to raise a over £70,000 thanks to kind public donations, which covered the cost of Ellie’s medical flight home and hospital bills while she was being treated in Crete.

Sarah added: “The family are so overwhelmed with all the support from messages and donations, and we will be eternally grateful to everyone, including the hospital.

“People have been incredible, and it shows that people come together in a time of need. Ellie wouldn’t be recovering without the donations and support.”

Ellie returned to the UK on Sunday July 9th where she was admitted to a neuro trauma hospital who are assisting her with her recovery.

Leanne is continuing to remain by Ellie’s side throughout her recovery.
