Boris Johnson is recovering after undergoing a ‘minor operation’ at a London hospital this morning, Number 10 has said.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said he was placed under general anaesthetic at around 6am this morning to undergo a ‘routine procedure’ related to his sinuses.
He was back in Downing Street shortly after 10am, the spokesperson added.
Deputy prime minister Dominic Raab will make any ‘significant decisions’ that are required to be made ahead of Johnson returning to work on Tuesday.
Raab also took over ministerial duties when Johnson was admitted into intensive care after catching Covid in 2020.
The deputy prime minister later told the Conservatives’ virtual party conference that he feared Johnson could have died.
The prime minister’s sinus condition isn’t believed to be in relation to his previous Covid illness.
This comes just two weeks after Johnson narrowly won a vote of no confidence, which saw 148 (41.2%) MPs vote against him following numerous Downing Street party scandals during the Covid pandemic.

Following his success, the rules as they currently stand say that Conservative MPs cannot challenge him again for another twelve months.
However, with 41.2% of Tory MPs voting against his leadership, Johnson is now in the midst of a bigger rebellion than that of Theresa May when she faced her own confidence vote in 2018.
37% of Tory MPs said they had no confidence in her leadership and, despite initially winning the vote, she resigned from her role just five months later.
