Drivers have been warned to expect hours of delays as the M6 Northbound in Lancashire remains completely closed.

The closure is due to an overturned lorry, with recovery work taking place between junctions J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange) to J33 A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South / Garstang), as per ITV News.

The road has been closed since around 2:30am, and is expected to remain so for several more hours due to the ‘difficult nature’ of removing the lorry and cleaning up the road.

In a website post, National Highways said: “The M6 is Lancashire is closed northbound between J32 and J33.

“This is due to to an overturned HGV. A large amount of diesel and oil has spilled onto the carriageway.

Lancashire Police and Highways North West have since warned drivers to follow diversions, signposted by the hollow circle symbol.

The diversion takes M55 Westbound to J1 then exit and take the A6 Northbound through Broughton towards Garstang.

National Highways said the road is expected to be cleared and normal traffic conditions are likely to resume between 10am and 10.15am.

A number of overnight closures on the M6 are planned across the weekend as thousands of people plan on leaving Manchester to enjoy the warm weather.

The motorway will be fully closed on the southbound carriage between J21a and J20 due to essential repair work from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Saturday.

The closure will take place at the same times across Sunday night and Monday morning.
