A horror crash on the M6 saw a lorry sliced in half before it burst into flames.
Emergency services, including air ambulance, rushed to the scene on the M6 Staffordshire where the lorry had completely overturned and lay under a bridge, at around 11.40am on Sunday, April 16th.
The motorway was closed from junction 12 for Cannock to junction 13 for Stafford, and traffic was stopped in both directions, causing a huge backlog on the stretch and affecting nearby routes. Diversions were put in place.
Air ambulance landed on the stretch of motorway but it is unclear whether there were any injuries at the moment in time. The stretch remained closed for emergency repair and resurfacing works overnight.
The road was reopened by the early hours this morning but lane one has remained closed for ongoing repairs due to the extensive damage.
Images on National Highways West Midlands’ Twitter page show the top carriage of the lorry completely sheared off the wheelbase and the front cabin also severed from the rest of the vehicle, as it lay on the road facing the other side of the bridge.
In a statement, National Highways said: “The M6 in Staffordshire is closed northbound between J12 and J13 due to a road traffic collision involving a Heavy Goods Vehicle which has overturned and caught fire.
“Central Motorway Police Group, Fire & Rescue, Air Ambulance and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene.
“The southbound carriageway has been released. Traffic within the northbound closure is currently being released past the scene.”
