Coronavirus cases are continuing to rise across our region, with the average infection rate for Greater Manchester sitting at 374.8 per 100,000 people in the week ending January 3rd.

While that is a 73.4% increase on the previous week’s figures it’s still a long way off from London, with the capital seeing an average rate of 971 per 100,000, while the England-wide average is 619.1.

However, cases are rising in every borough of Greater Manchester, with most areas seeing between a 60-90% increase on the previous week.

Wigan has the highest rates in the region, with 424.8 per 100,000 in the seven days to January 3rd (up 91%), while Trafford is close behind with a rate of 424.3 (up 60%).

Bury has a rate of 405.3 (up 55%, the smallest increase in the region), followed by Stockport (396.7, up 64%), Manchester (386.2, up 91%), Salford (362.8, up 76%) and Rochdale (358.8, up 57%).

Just behind them is Oldham with 334.4 (up 78%) and Tameside, which has a rate of 329.4 (up 68%), while Bolton currently has the lowest rates in Greater Manchester at 305.7 per 100,000, seeing a rise of 71%.

Last night Boris Johnson pledged an unprecedented national vaccine effort across the UK, however GPs have warned of ‘teething problems’ in some areas in regards to getting supply.

Speaking at a Downing Street press conference, Mr Johnson did admit there would likely be ‘difficulties’ in rolling out the vaccine.

He said: “Let’s be clear, this is a national challenge on a scale like nothing we’ve seen before and it will require an unprecedented national effort.

“Of course, there will be difficulties, appointments will be changed but… the Army is working hand in glove with the NHS and local councils to set up our vaccine network and using battle preparation techniques to help us keep up the pace.”

The Prime Minister confirmed that nearly 1.5 million people have now been vaccinated, with the plan that everyone in care homes will have had a jab by the end of January, and that the most vulnerable groups should be vaccinated by mid-February.

Greater Manchester Police

Two men have now been charged with murder, following the discovery of a human torso in Kersal Dale.

As well as that, more suspected human remains were also discovered this morning, Monday April 29th, in an alleyway close to the railway lines off Worsley Road, Eccles.

This follows earlier discoveries of human remains over the past three weeks, at Kersal Dale, Blackleach Reservoir and Colliery Wood, all in Salford.

Greater Manchester Police

Michal Jaroslaw Polchowski (25/04/1956) and Marcin Majerkiewicz (10/04/1982) both of Worsley Road, Eccles, have been charged with murder.

They are set to appear at Tameside Magistrates Court this afternoon.

While formal identification is still ongoing, the remains found at Kersal Dale are believed to be of a local man in his 60s. The remains found at the other three locations are still to be tested, but police are confident they belong to the same victim.

ACC Sarah Jackson said: “We have had large numbers of officers, staff and specialists working diligently on this investigation over the last three weeks. It has been very much a large, collective effort, with the victim and family at the heart of it from the outset.

“We have specially trained officers deployed to support the family as they come to terms with this tragic news. They are aware of this morning’s further discovery and will continue to be kept up to date with how we are progressing.

“Despite the charges brought today, our work is far from over.

“The scenes we already have established in Bury and Salford will remain in place for much of this week whilst our searches and enquiries continue. Local officers will continue to patrol the impacted areas to provide reassurance.

“We will continue following every line of enquiry to recover and reunite the victim with his family, bringing a dignified end to this terrible scenario.

“I’d like to thank the communities of Salford and beyond for their cooperation throughout this investigation. I know this incident has come as a shock, and the support we’ve had from those in the area is very much appreciated.”
