Coronavirus cases are continuing to rise across our region, with the average infection rate for Greater Manchester sitting at 374.8 per 100,000 people in the week ending January 3rd. While that is a 73.4% increase on the previous week’s figures it’s still a long way off from London, with the capital seeing an average rate of 971 per 100,000, while the England-wide average is 619.1. However, cases are rising in every borough of Greater Manchester, with most areas seeing between a 60-90% increase on the previous week.

Last night Boris Johnson pledged an unprecedented national vaccine effort across the UK, however GPs have warned of ‘teething problems’ in some areas in regards to getting supply. Speaking at a Downing Street press conference, Mr Johnson did admit there would likely be ‘difficulties’ in rolling out the vaccine. He said: “Let’s be clear, this is a national challenge on a scale like nothing we’ve seen before and it will require an unprecedented national effort. “Of course, there will be difficulties, appointments will be changed but… the Army is working hand in glove with the NHS and local councils to set up our vaccine network and using battle preparation techniques to help us keep up the pace.”
The Prime Minister confirmed that nearly 1.5 million people have now been vaccinated, with the plan that everyone in care homes will have had a jab by the end of January, and that the most vulnerable groups should be vaccinated by mid-February.
