Man fighting for life after ‘setting himself on fire’ at petrol station

A man is in hospital fighting for his life after reportedly ‘setting himself alight’ at a Tesco petrol station last night.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of the concern for the welfare of a man at the Tesco petrol station on Victoria Avenue East, in Blackley, at around 7.35pm on Monday, September 4th.

It is believed the man set himself alight on the forecourt, and has been left with severe burns and in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

The man was treated at the scene by fire and ambulance crews where he was given trauma care.

It is understood the incident is not being treated as suspicious though enquiries are ongoing.

The scene was cordoned off for several hours while Fire Scene and CSI officers were at work.

Scorched debris could be seen left on the ground from the incident.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.35pm, officers were called to reports for the concern of the welfare of a man on Victoria Avenue East, Manchester.

“A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in a life-threatening condition. A cordon remains in place.”
