Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill, GMP has confirmed today.

While the twenty-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday, January 30th, Greater Manchester Police has said today it had been granted more time to question him having previously been given an extension on Monday.

GMP said in a statement that the player was arrested on Sunday after the force ‘became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence’.

The statement continued: “An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his twenties has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning.”

A force spokesman said inquiries were ongoing.

On the evening of January 30th, photos, videos, and voice memos started circulating on social media that showed Greenwood allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Shortly following this, Manchester United announced that Greenwood would not be returning to training, saying in a statement: “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established.

“Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Sportswear brand Nike – which sponsors the striker – quickly followed suit, saying: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Greater Manchester Police has also stressed that domestic violence victims shouldn’t suffer in silence, saying in a statement: “If you’re a victim of domestic abuse, or are concerned about someone you know, please use our online reporting facility or use our LiveChat facility on our website, or call 101.

“In an emergency that’s on-going or life is in danger, always dial 999.”
