With Christmas fast approaching, a charity has issued a warning to dog owners to help keep their pets safe.

The Dogs Trust Manchester took to social media to warn pet owners, releasing a list of popular festive goodies that can be harmful to dogs.

A lot of people will be aware that chocolate can be bad for your pooch, but they might not know that things like onions and mistletoe should also be kept away from them.

Some of our favourite Christmas goodies can actually make dogs sick, so you best keep them out of reach during the festivities.

The Dogs Trust Manchester took to Twitter to say: “With less than a week to go until Christmas, here’s some useful info to keep your dog safe this festive season!”

Attached to the post were these these top tips for dog owners:

  • Ensure human treats are out of sight, reach and smell
  • Don’t let your dog eat: Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, mince pies or chocolate
  • Teach the all-important ‘leave it’ lesson
  • Don’t let your dog drink: Drinking chocolate, mulled wine or any alcohol
  • Watch out for holly berries and mistletoe. These cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy
  • Avoid onions, leeks, garlic, shallots and chives. These cause diarrhea, vomiting and damage to red blood cells

Make sure you stay safe this festive season!
