Residents across Manchester can now apply to close their roads for a Jubilee street party – just like the good old days.

As the country gears up for four days worth of celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth’s seventieth year on the throne, Manchester City Council is inviting local communities to throw their very own street parties to mark the occasion.

To support communities wanting to hold their own celebrations this summer, the council will be waiving its usual fee for road closure requests, and will also be offering some funding ‘where available’ to certain communities.

It will also be offering assistance with roads closures.

Joanne Roney OBE, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, said on the upcoming celebrations: “It’s a historic milestone to reach, and the extended bank holiday weekend will be a perfect time to celebrate a lifetime of service.

“We know Mancunians will want to celebrate, so this is your chance to get family, friends, neighbours together for a once in a lifetime street party [and] I’d encourage those who want to have a street party to submit their road closure form as soon as possible and apply for funding to ensure that their street party is fitting of this momentous occasion.

“I hope that Mancunians across the city come together to celebrate and have a great time in June.”

Residents have until Friday April 22nd to apply to close their road for the Jubilee. You can find out more information and submit an application via the Manchester City Council website here.

And street parties aren’t the only things lined up to mark the Queen’s seventieth year on the throne; there will be four days worth of celebrations this year, including a four-day bank holiday weekend.

Other celebrations that weekend will include a Platinum Pudding Competition, which will be judged by baking royalty Dame Mary Berry.

And between the dates of May 12th-15th, the ‘spectacular’ equestrian display A Gallop Through History will showcase horses from across the globe in a ‘personal tribute to our monarchy’.

There will also be a celebrity-packed Party At The Palace – those lined up to perform at the show have not yet been named, but it has been hinted that some of the biggest stars in the world will be in attendance.
