Metrolink services were suspended this morning on the Rochdale and Oldham line after a car was left abandoned on the tracks.

Commuters were held up as trams were unable to move between Freehold and Rochdale town centre because the vehicle was blocking the lines as disruption began shortly after 7am this morning.

Photographs taken of the scene show a white Renault Megane stranded near the Westwood stop as passengers walked around it.

It is understood passengers were told to walk when the trams were stopped.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) advised passengers to use bus services to travel between Rochdale and Freehold where they could pick up trams to Manchester city centre.

The incident was resolved at around 8am and services resumed however, there were some delays as they recovered from the disruption.

Passengers reported overcrowding on trams following the incident.

The Bee Network released a statement saying: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to your journey this morning.”
