Policing Minister, Kit Malthouse, denied Tier 3 restrictions are ‘confusing’ but got the rules mixed up when asked a simple question.
Chatting to Sky News, Policing Minister Kit Malthouse was asked if the rules for the new tier system were confusing.
He replied: There’s plenty of information out there. There’s plenty of places you can go and find out what the rules in your area are.
And later added: “It behoves all of us to go inform ourselves about what conditions we’re living under and make sure we comply,”
When later asked if gyms can open in Greater Manchester he said: “I don’t think gyms can, I’m not entirely sure, but then I don’t live in Manchester.
“If I were a gym user in Manchester I would go and check on the regulations.
He reiterated: “Look people have to go and check. It’s not confusing if you go and check.”
It’s not the first time MPs have got the new rules incorrect. Yesterday, Robert Jenrick said he believed Greater Manchester would have to close its gyms.
He said the region would be adopting the ‘same’ lockdown model as Lancashire, where gyms were allowed to stay open.
Mr Malthouse was later asked if the R number needed to be below one in a region for it to be taken out of Tier 3 restrictions.
He said: “It needs to be low enough that we’re not going to see a significant spread.
“The R number needs to be below one, but there are a number of other different things. It relates to the infection rate in the community as a whole, but also other indicators. What is the capacity in the local hospital? Are we able to cope with any kind of rise in that particular area?
“There will be a conversation every 28 days, with local leaders and the health boffins who are looking at the numbers to look at what we can do to get areas out of tier 3.”
