Ronan Keating’s older brother has been named as the victim of a fatal horror car crash in County Mayo, Ireland.
The former Boyzone singer’s older brother Ciaran has been named locally as the man who was killed in a two-car crash on the N5 at Ballymiles, near Swinford, on Saturday afternoon, July 15th.
Ciaran Keating, who was in his 50s, is believed to have been travelling with his wife who was also injured in the incident, which happened at around 3.35pm.
The couple were on their way to watch their son Ruairí play for Cork City FC as the team took on Sligo Rovers.
In a statement confirming the death, a spokesperson for Cork City FC, said: “All at Cork City FC are deeply saddened at the passing of Ciaran Keating, father of our player Ruairi Keating.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Ruairi and the entire Keating family at this exceptionally difficult time. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course. May he rest in peace.”
The League of Ireland also expressed its condolences to the Keating family with a tweet, reading: “The League of Ireland is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Ruairi Keating’s father Ciaran.
“We would like to send our condolences to Ruairi and his family and all at @CorkCityFC at this very difficult time.”
Ciaran’s wife Anne Marie, a secondary school teacher, was taken to Mayo University Hospital where she is being treated for injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
The driver of the second vehicle, a male, is in hospital being treated for serious injuries and a male passenger is being treated for injuries not believed to be life threatening.
Ciaran has been named locally in the area of Westport where he lived.
Christy Hyland, an Independent member of Mayo County Council, said: “Our sympathy goes out to all the Keating family. Ciaran’s death is truly shocking”.
Ronan, a judge on The Voice, is the youngest of five siblings. He has a sister named Linda and two other brothers, Gerard and Gary.
A technical examination of the crash scene and the vehicles involved has been conducted by Garda forensic collision investigators.
Police in Ireland are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
