The goal scorer in Spain’s World Cup final win, which saw them beat England 1-0, was told of her father’s death shortly after the match ended.
World Cup legend Olga Carmona was informed of the sad news just hours after she secured her country’s victory in the dramatic final.
The Spanish 23-year-old scored the winning goal in the 29th minute during the historic game held in Australia, which saw Spain go on to claim their first World title.
The Spanish Football Federation later confirmed that Carmona was told the heartbreaking news of her father’s passing after the match.
Her club Real Madrid released a statement saying: “Real Madrid, our president and our board of directors are deeply saddened by the death of the father of our player Olga Carmona.
“Real Madrid want to express our condolences and our love to Olga, her family and all her loved ones.”
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) also offered their condolences in a statement which read: “The @RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona’s father.
“The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final.
“We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football.”
