A taxi driver in Greater Manchester has been charged following a video that went viral online.
Mohammed Jamal, 37, of Shaw in Oldham, has been charged with soliciting. Police say the charge relates to an alleged incident involving an adult female in a taxi on Thames Street, Rochdale in the early hours of Easter Sunday, April 9th.
Jamal has been granted bail ahead of an appearance at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Thursday May 4th 2023.
The video, caught on a mobile phone camera, was shared widely across social media over the bank holiday weekend and appears to show a man with his pants down in the back of a taxi.
Uber says it has banned the driver while it investigates the footage. The company posted a comment online which read: “We are horrified by what is depicted in the video and are taking action.
“We have banned the driver while we investigate and are working directly with the police.”
Greater Manchester Police have urged the public to ‘refrain from engaging in conversations online’ at this time and to ‘remove’ the ‘previously circulated videos’ for the purpose of a fair trial.
Rochdale Borough Council said: “This is a live police investigation and we are liaising with Greater Manchester Police with a view to acting on any information they confirm and share with the Council.”
