A van driver ‘deliberately’ ploughed into a flock of geese crossing the road in Salford, killing three at the scene, according to the RSPCA.

The ‘shocking’ and ‘cruel’ incident happened on Wednesday July 12th on Lower Broughton Road, Broughton, at approximately 10.40am.

The geese were crossing the road at the time of the incident, which killed three at the scene, with two more juveniles having to be put down due to their injuries.

The RSPCA says it has CCTV footage of the incident which shows two men in a white van as it drove into the birds without stopping.

The animal welfare charity is now appealing for witnesses to come forward to help them in their investigation as the number plate can not be clearly made out on the footage.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Whalley, who is investigating, believes it was a ‘deliberate’ act and called it ‘cruel’ and ‘unnecessary’. “It’s also against the law to deliberately kill a wild bird, so I’m very keen to speak to those responsible,” she added.

“It is a shocking and sad incident and we are keen to see dashcam footage from anyone who was in the area at the time or hear from people who witnessed it and may have information.”

Anyone with information should contact the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference 01113258.
