An American tourist has taken to social media to blast British food as ‘unseasoned trash’ after she visited Toby Carvery and Wetherspoons.
Charlie, 24, from New Jersey went viral on TikTok after sharing her brutally honest opinion about some popular British food chains.
The foodie, who goes by @lunchpailgin on TikTok, shared a video to her social media page to review British food.
In the clip she says she visited the UK where she was ‘shown around by natives’ and tried a number of places including Wetherspoons, Toby Carvery, Nando’s and even a ‘proper Chinese’ – which she said are all ‘unseasoned’ and ‘terrible’.
Bringing in 1.1 million views, Charlie said: “It’s been really popular to s**t on British food in the last year and I am here to tell you it’s not wrong.”
The social media user was not impressed by any of the food saying it’s ‘nothing special’ and they do better versions in the States.
She said British food could never touch the American equivalents and compared Wetherspoons to Applebee’s and Nando’s to Chipotlé – but not as good.
After calling Nando’s a ‘milder version’ of Chipotlé, she added: “It’s not that special. We have one in Miami. Next time you’re in Florida, just like go visit it. It’s really nothing great.”
On trying a British roast dinner at Toby Carvery, she boldly argued that America does it better. “They’re probably better than anything that [Brits] could ever imagine,” she commented.
She said the chains were the only places she could eat consistently in the UK as ‘everything else is a f***ing gamble’.
She added: “Y’all do not do seasoning. I don’t give a f***, y’all don’t use them.”
However, she did say that British Indian food in the UK is ‘hitting’ while doing a chef’s kiss – at least we know we can do something right.
The shocking review of British food went viral on TikTok as many users jumped to the comment section to share their thoughts and experiences.
One person piped up: “Louisiana boy, here. I’d rather [die]. Our worst food probably tastes delicious by comparison”.
Another said: “It always looks cold. The only food that looks good is when they make homemade Sunday roast dinners.” And a third wrote: “They don’t like ranch over there, I think it’s because it’s too flavourful.”
A number of Brits also jumped in the comments to defend the nation’s delicacies. One commenter laughed: “Toby carvery and Wetherspoons aren’t supposed to be good they are just cheap!!!”
Another put: “I was about to be offended but then you said you went to Wetherspoons and Toby’s.”
