A brilliant new initiative

Asda has announced it will be selling second-hand clothes in stores across the UK.

The supermarket chain will be stocking the used garments in 50 of its stores around the country, after a successful trial at a store in Leeds.

Asda says the concept was a success at the store in West Yorkshire, and as a result it now plans to stock the clothes more widely.

The supermarket’s George brand will be linking up with specialist wholesaler Preloved Vintage Kilo to launch the project.

Asda has already launched a scheme where they ask customers to bring all of their unwanted clothes back to stores.

According to them the new scheme will ‘give a new lease of life’ to already worn clothes, as well as letting customers ‘buy vintage, retro and second-hand branded pieces, preventing thousands of tonnes of garments going to landfill each year’.

The scheme will  launch under the PVW (Preloved Vintage Wholesale) brand name.

Steve Lynam, the managing director for Preloved Vintage, said more than 800 tonnes of clothing has been saved from landfill by the company so far, adding that the new project with Asda would increase that ‘dramatically’.

He said: “In a world where we are becoming more environmentally conscious this partnership will help bring sustainable fashion to the mainstream which is something as a business we strive for in everything we do.

“The more people that buy into the circular economy and shop vintage & retro the bigger impact we will have on climate change.”
