When it comes to the humble roast potato, arguments and debates on the matter are scarce because, well, they’re perfect.
The unproblematic Sunday roast item is beloved nationwide, with millions tucking into them alongside their Yorkshire puddings and roast chicken week in, week out.
However, there is one aspect of the tasty side that some people tend to disagree on; what exactly is the best way to cook them?
While some people lather their spuds in goose fat, others think olive oil is the secret to the mastering the perfect roastie – crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.

Well, one internet chef thinks he has the answer and, remarkably, his method doesn’t even require an oven – you know, the very thing people tend to roast their potatoes in.
Morgan Hipworth shares various recipes and cooking hacks to his 900k-strong TikTok following, and has now proclaimed to have mastered the recipe for ‘the best roast potatoes ever’ without the need for an oven.
In his video, Morgan peels and dices his potatoes before boiling them until soft. Then, he drains the potatoes and dries them out on a baking tray, before finely slicing a whole garlic bulb.
He fries the garlic in a pan of hot olive oil, which becomes the main cooking ingredient for his spuds. He explains: “Peel the garlic cloves and then thinly slice. Add them to a pot with the olive oil and then allow to cook on a low heat for about twenty minutes.
“This is what I call liquid gold.”
After removing the garlic, he pours his infused oil into a frying pan and adds the potatoes to be sautéed.
Once the potatoes are ‘super crispy’, Morgan adds sea salt, fresh rosemary and the fried garlic cloves before serving.
While Morgan’s roasties aren’t technically roasties (mainly thanks to the lack of an oven), they do look seriously good, and will be well worth a try when you’re next wanting to save a bit of time on your Sunday roast.
