A dog has been shot dead by police after mauling a schoolgirl and a pizza delivery driver in Rochdale.

Armed officers were called to a property down Morley Street on Friday night (August 5th) following reports of an aggressive dog on the loose.

Upon their arrival at 9.30pm, officers found the dog had bitten two people and was ‘acting in an aggressive manner’.

The dog was subsequently shot dead on the doorstep of a terraced house around twenty yards away from where the attacks took place.

In a statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 9.30pm last night (Friday August 5th), police were called to reports of a dog loose on Morley Street, Rochdale.

“Officers attended and found that two members of the public had been bitten by the dog who was acting in an aggressive manner.

“Unfortunately, due to the nature of the incident, the dog was humanely destroyed as a safety precaution due to the number of people in the area and the injuries caused.

“Enquiries are ongoing. No serious injuries were reported.”

The dog, believed to have been an American pit bull, was first spotted by neighbours at 7:30pm. One resident told the Manchester Evening News that the police were trying to coax it out from under a caravan for ‘forty-five minutes’.

They said: “It started walking towards a lady police officer and she Tasered it. The dog started running and they just shot it. I’ve never seen anything like it, I’ve never seen a gun being fired before. It was distressing.”

Another neighbour added: “It was brutal, horrible. There were about twenty police officers. They blocked off the road.

“At first I think they shot him with a taser. Then I heard another shot. It ran down the street trying to get in all the houses. Then they shot him on the doorstep.”
