Driver thought ‘follow me’ sign on police car was an Instagram request

A police officer recently shared his amusement after a driver believed his colleague’s ‘follow me’ sign was a not-so-subtle social media request.

Taking to Twitter over the weekend, Sergeant Paul Cording explained that one of his North Yorkshire colleagues had pulled alongside the driver after catching him on his mobile phone.

As he drove alongside the driver, the officer illuminated his ‘follow me’ sign, which was positioned in the rear of his car.

However, it took the driver a little longer than most to catch on with the meaning of the officer’s polite request.

Sgt Cording explained: “You couldn’t write this!! As my colleague came alongside a driver on his mobile phone and illuminated this sign it took a while for him to comply with the request.

“His answer ‘I didn’t realise you were a cop, I thought it was an Instagram request’!”

The driver was subsequently issued a Traffic Offence Report for using his phone behind the wheel (not for his lack of common sense, surprisingly).

Of course, social media users were completely dumbfounded by Sergeant Cording’s post, with many questioning how the driver was able to obtain a license in the first place.

One person wrote: “How embarrassing for the fellow… ignorance isn’t always bliss.”

Another pondered: “Omg how do they get a driving licence?”

Moral of the story? Don’t try and follow a police officer on socials when they’re pulling you over for being on your phone. Or even better, just don’t be on your phone at all.
