A driver has been captured overtaking nearly 40 queuing cars on the road while obeying the highway code.

Dashcam footage shows the car driving down a three-lane motorway before spotting a sign that says their lane will close in 400 yards.

Despite the visible signage, while other drivers begin to merge left, this driver carries on further up the lane — which is all captured on his dashcam.

As the traffic cones begin to appear at the point where the lane closes, the driver then filters left into the next lane with ease, leaving enough space to do so.

TikTok user @dills_taxi captioned the video: ‘Merging done right’. He admitted some people would accuse him of ‘cutting in’, but added: “The other car is like, what? Are we allowed to do that? Yes. That’s my thing. This is why I get to do it. Yes, they say it’s cutting in.”

According to the Highway Code, drivers must follow signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. According to Rule 134, it states: “In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily.

“Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed.”

The video has gone viral with 85k views and 147 comments at time of writing. Commenters were divided in opinion as they viewed the footage and quickly took to their keyboards to express their opinions.

One person wrote: “Did this the other day and got sworn at.” Another, also on-side, said: “People who don’t do this need to do some reading on the Highway Code.”

A truck driver agreed and exclaimed: “If more cars did this…then other 2 lanes wouldn’t grind to a halt!”

With a ‘fight them or join them’ mentality, a fourth added: “Either get mad, or do it yourself. I know what’s better for my heart condition…..”

While another admitted: “I think people are scared that no one would let them in if they do that….. But it’s soooo fun!”

But on the other side of the debate, one person who had no time for games, said: “People simply can’t be a**ed. We know the lanes are closed, and just sit and wait.”

In disapproval, a second typed: “There’s always one.” And a third blasted: “It’s people like you that cause accidents.” And a fourth pointed out: “Never overtake a line of traffic at speed.”
