Ford has confirmed its faithful Fiesta model will be discontinued next year as it takes a focus on electric cars.

The Ford Fiesta is one of the UK’s best-selling cars, with around 4,804,098 having been sold in its forty-six-year life, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Since its debut in 1976, there have been more than 22 million examples of the Ford Fiesta across nine generations, which has proven popular over the years to a broad range of drivers.

However, Ford has now confirmed that the humble Fiesta will cease production in its factory in Cologne, Germany, by June 2023.

Ford will also be stopping its S-Max and Galaxy people carriers in April 2023.

In a statement, the car manufacturer said: “At Ford in Europe, we are accelerating our efforts to go all-in on electrification with our passenger vehicles being fully electric by 2030 – and all vehicles across our Ford portfolio by 2035.

“As we get ready to transition to an electric future, we will discontinue production of S-Max and Galaxy in Valencia, Spain in April 2023 and discontinue Fiesta production in Cologne, Germany by end of June 2023.”

The company will instead be focusing on its all-electric future, with four new battery powered cars and five vans over the next two years.

In the wake of the news, former Ford Fiesta owners have been taking to social media to share their memories with the iconic vehicle.

One person wrote: “Sad to hear that the Ford Fiesta is being discontinued. My first car was a Fiesta Quartz, which I eventually crashed into my gatepost while trying to turn up the volume on my stereo cassette player to impress the girl who lived across the road.”

Another reminisced: “My sister’s first car – I remember my mum under the bonnet every single morning with a can of WD40 trying to get it started.”

And a third commented: “Since we’re on Ford Fiesta stories, my dad had his burgundy Fiesta stolen in the 90’s. It was used in a robbery then left with the keys in it on a local carpark.”
