Amid the excitement of England’s Euro 2020 semi-final win last night, the government is allegedly considering implementing an extra bank holiday Monday if they win the final this weekend.
The Three Lions will face Italy on Sunday evening, where they will have the chance to win England’s first major tournament since the World Cup in 1966.
With the match kicking off at 8pm, the government confirmed earlier this week that licensing laws will be relaxed to allow pubs to stay open until 11.15pm in case the game goes to extra-time and penalties.
However, one issue remains – how will those working on Monday morning cope with their sore heads the next day?
Well, the government could very well be coming up with a solution: An extra bank holiday.
According to POLITICO, ministers and senior government officials were discussing late last night how a potential victory can be celebrated.
Many think a national holiday on Monday is the best idea when there is little prospect of any work getting done anyway – though the timing could prove to be logistically challenging.
Either way, government officials think there should be a ‘national day of celebration’ if Harry Kane and his team bring it home, POLITICO reports.
There is also speculation as to whether manager Gareth Southgate and players such as Raheem Sterling are in line for knighthoods, regardless of the result.
