Harry Styles has pledged to donate $1m (£790,760) to a gun safety organisation in the wake of the Texas school shooting, which claimed the lives of nineteen children and two adults.

The twenty-eight-year-old will be donating the money to the non-profit charity Everytown, which campaigns for gun control and an end to gun violence in the US.

Writing on social media, the former One Direction singer explained: “Along with all of you, I have been absolutely devastated by the recent string of mass shootings in America, culminating at the latest in Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

“On our North American tour, we will be partnering with Everytown who work to end gun violence, donating to support their efforts, and sharing their suggested action items.”

Shortly after Styles’s donation announcement, entertainment company Live Nation then revealed that it will be matching the singer’s donation to Everytown, ‘equalling over $1m and counting’.

Everytown is on a mission to end gun violence in America by changing the attitude towards firearms, campaigning for a change in gun laws and regulations and building partnerships to raise awareness.

The non-profit also supports the families and friends of the victims of gun violence.

On Tuesday (May 24th), eighteen-year-old Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Elementary School, killing nineteen children and two adults.

The massacre was the deadliest U.S. school shooting since 2012, when twenty children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

The shooting has sparked fresh cries for change to gun laws in the U.S., which have continuously been blamed for the number of incidents taking place across the country; this year alone, there have been over 200 mass shootings in the U.S.
