A couple who stumbled across a new stone artwork by the so-called ‘Borrowdale Banksy’ have said while they are ‘thrilled’, they will not be revealing its location.

Last year, visitors to the Lake District started noticing an elaborate rock formation that perfectly framed the view of the Borrowdale Valley.

Since then, the sculpture has become somewhat of a tourist attraction, with the artist given the nickname ‘Borrowdale Banksy’ for their anonymity.

While similar installations have popped up in various beauty spots in the area during the last year, including Castle Crag and Raven Crag, a new sculpture has been spotted by a pair of wild campers, who came across the installation at Borrowdale at sunrise on Monday, August 1st.

Daniel and Agnieszka Farrington from Carnforth, Lancashire, told the BBC that getting to the sculpture was ‘a bit of a scramble’. Daniel added: “We were thrilled to find it just after sunrise, but it’s a bit of a scramble to get to and quite craggy.

“People are asking where it is but we don’t want to say too much so it can stay there as long as possible and not be destroyed or knocked over.

“It isn’t near a path.”

Daniel said he believed the artist responsible for the sculpture must have used a wooden frame base to arrange the precariously balanced slate work.

He said: “We hope it lasts for as long as possible, so we don’t want to encourage lots of people as the area is a bit unstable.”

Back in May, walkers were dismayed to discover that one of the sculptures had collapsed, either as a result of natural causes or vandalism.

The sad fate of the Haystacks formation was reported by Nicola Crisp and her partner Freddie Forsyth, who had been on a mission to track it down.

Freddie told Cumbria Crack: “It was still not easy to find, but eventually we discovered it. Unfortunately it was all a bit of an anti-climax, as it had fallen down.”

It is yet to be confirmed whether the formation had been deliberately vandalised or knocked over as a result of the weather – but all we can hope is that a new one will pop up soon.
