Channel 4 presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy was heard calling a Tory minister a ‘c***’ during live coverage of Suella Braverman’s resignation as Home Secretary last night.
In the twenty-second clip shared widely on social media, Guru-Murthy could be heard using the slur in reference to Conservative MP Steve Baker following a ‘robust’ interview.
While the camera was pointing at a police officer guarding the entrance to Number 10, the presenter was heard shouting off-camera: “Thanks a lot, Steve.
“It wasn’t a stupid question, Steve, you know it. I’m very happy to go up against you on [PM Liz] Truss any day.”
He then laughed before saying: “What a c***”.
The presenter has since addressed the incident, confirming he reached out to Baker to apologise for his comment.
Guru-Murthy said in a statement posted onto Twitter: “After a robust interview with Steve Baker MP I used a very offensive word in an unguarded moment off air.
“While it was not broadcast that word in any context is beneath the standards I set myself and I apologise unreservedly. I have reached out to Steve Baker to say sorry”.
Baker replied to the tweet accepting the apology, writing: “I appreciate you apologising. Thank You.”
However, he later told Times Radio that it was ‘most unfortunate’ Guru-Murthy swore on tape, saying he hopes the broadcaster ‘sacks him’ if he breached his code of conduct.
Baker said: “I had an interview earlier with a journalist I don’t have a great deal of regard for, who I felt always misrepresents the situation through the construction of his question, which I called out, I think live on air, or I thought it was a pre-record.
“And he clearly didn’t like that, quite right, too. But I’d be quite honest, I spent a long time live on air, calling him out on his contact as a journalist and glad to do so any time.
“But it’s most unfortunate that he has sworn on air like that. If it’s in breach of his code of conduct, I do hope they sack him – it would be a service to the public.”
