Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has reportedly been having a hard time behind bars after believing he would be held in a ‘VIP’ wing.

The twenty-seven-year-old left back, who joined the club in 2017, was transported to the notorious HMP Altcourse in Liverpool on Friday after appearing in court charged with four counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

French national Mendy is alleged to have attacked three different women, including one under the age of eighteen, at his home in Prestbury over ten months.

But today, new reports are claiming that the disgraced player suffered a devastating misunderstanding when arriving at the Category B jail in Liverpool; upon arrival, he was told he was going to be put on the VP wing, according to The Sun.

VP wings, found in every prison across the UK, keep vulnerable prisoners and sex offender suspects away from the main prison population for their own safety.

However, Mendy allegedly misunderstood prison staff and thought he was going to the ‘VIP wing’ instead. A source said: “When Mendy arrived staff explained he was going to be kept on the VP wing for his own safety.

“But perhaps because he is French and his English isn’t great, he misunderstood what they had said and thought he was being taken to a VIP wing for celebrities.

“He had a rude awakening when he saw the cell and realised who he was going to be mixing with. He wasn’t happy and it was a very sobering experience for him.”

Last week, Manchester City released a statement on Mendy’s suspension which read: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process and the Club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Mendy is due to appear at Chester crown court on September 10th.
