Manchester’s world-famous Christmas Markets have been named as the best to visit in the whole of the UK.

According to the new research by Christmas Tree World, the Manchester Christmas Markets were the most-searched for festive event on Google, with over 60,000 searches a month and 8,000 mentions on Instagram.

Thanks to this, Manchester came out on top with an overall score of 7.54 out of 10 across five different measurements. Nottingham came in second place, while Leeds was third.

Other close contenders included Birmingham and Edinburgh.

And what may come as a surprise to many, Manchester was also ranked as the ‘most affordable’ city to stay due to the number of cheap hotels that people can book in order to make a festive break of it while visiting the markets.

The study said the average 3* hotel stay in Manchester came in at £68 – the cheapest of any of the cities ranked in the top ten.

The study’s authors said: “Ranking as the best Christmas market in the UK is Manchester.

“With over 60,000 searches on Google and an average of 8,000 mentions on Instagram, the city’s market scored an overall score of 7.54.

“If you’re looking to get into the Christmas spirit and enjoy the festivities this year then Manchester’s Christmas markets are a must, and can be enjoyed from November for forty-two days.”

The Manchester Christmas Markets will be opening to the public on Thursday November 10th, and will run right through until Thursday December 22nd.

Last week, Manchester City Council confirmed the markets will once again be transforming Piccadilly Gardens into the Winter Gardens, with over 220 stalls confirmed to be opening at the usual locations of Market Street, Cathedral Gardens, Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street, St Ann’s Square, Exchange Square, The Corn Exchange, and King Street.

It was also confirmed the return of the magical Manchester Christmas lights trail, which will illuminate the city centre throughout the festive season with its walk-through giant baubles, light arches and a Manchester bee.
