A mural of Marcus Rashford in Withington was defaced with hateful graffiti just an hour after England’s Euros 2020 loss against Italy last night.
The mural, painted in November last year by local artist Akse, had hateful words scrawled across it within the hour of England’s historic loss, where the Manchester United striker missed a penalty after the game went to a shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
A social media user shared photos of the vandalism last night, writing: “Someone has vandalised Marcus Rashford’s mural last night. Do you know how sick in the head do you have to be to do that? This is a f*****g disgrace.”
This comes after the Football Association publicly condemned the trolls who subjected certain England players to racist abuse on social media following last night’s match.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all fell victim to torrents of vile abuse online after they failed to score during the penalty shootouts.
An FA spokesperson said: “The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media.
“We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.
“Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse.”
Italy were crowned European champions in the Euros 2020 final last night after defeating England in the penalty shootouts following a 1-1 draw and extra time.
