Morrisons has announced that it’s donating half a million meals to support local pet rescue centres across the UK. The number of people owning pets saw an unprecedented rise last year, as many of us decided to get a furry companion during lockdown – more than two million dogs were bought between March and September. This increase in the number of cats and dogs needing feeding has seen demand for pet food rise dramatically as well.

On top of that, a lot of animal shelters are reporting that they are struggling, due to a lack of funding during the pandemic. Many pet rescue centres are facing the possibility of more cats and dogs than ever needing rehoming, as owners can no longer meet their needs. Morrisons has stepped in to help out struggling shelters, setting aside half a million meals to support local rescue centres in a bid to make sure no four-legged friend is left without food.
Via its network of ‘Community Champions’, the supermarket will work closely with local shelters to distribute the meals across the country.
Faye Atkins, pet food buyer at Morrisons, said: “Throughout the pandemic, our focus has been on feeding the nation, so it only felt right to support those pets who may not have found their forever home just yet as well. “We hope this donation will go some way to supporting the many shelters doing a fantastic job looking after some of our most vulnerable animals.”
