A Lake District mountain rescuer has praised the two pet dogs who raised the alarm after their owner collapsed while out walking.
One of the dogs ran after another hiker barking, while the other stayed with its owner, aged seventy-one, when he collapsed and lost consciousness near Keswick.
Rob Grange, from Keswick Mountain Rescue, said the team spend years training dogs to behave in that way in the event of an emergency, and had never seen them ‘do it off their own back’.

He told BBC Radio Cumbria: “It’s wonderful to see dogs doing it off their own backs and completely instinctively. We get the dogs to do exactly the same thing but we spend years training those natural traits to make sure they do it completely reliably.
“It’s not an unusual thing for a dog to do, but it’s just the fact a completely untrained dog decided to do this that is absolutely wonderful.
“I’ve not come across it in ten years of mountain rescue.”
Writing on Facebook, Keswick Mountain Rescue detailed how the man had collapsed from an apparent seizure while walking his dogs along Braithwaite How.

The black Labrador ran after another walker barking while the golden retriever stayed with the man, who eventually regained consciousness.
Other walkers called an ambulance who assisted the man back down the hill. There, he was taken to a nearby hospital to undergo a full medical check – it is believed the man has since made a full recovery.
They concluded: “Many thanks to the passing walker and the amazing dogs.”
