Popular children’s cartoon Peppa Pig has introduced a new character with same-sex parents for the first time.
Peppa Pig has enjoyed major success amongst children and their families since its debut in 2004 thanks to its range of lovable anthropomorphic animals, including Peppa herself, Suzy Sheep and Danny Dog.
But during Monday night’s episode, Penny Polar Bear made her debut and also history when she introduced her same-sex parents.
The episode, titled ‘Families’, saw Penny drawing a picture of her own family and telling Peppa that she has ‘two mummies’.

Penny says: “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”
The episode comes after a petition called for the show to feature a same-sex couple, with it ultimately gathering more than 23,000 signatures.
The petition read: “Despite there being six series and over 250 episodes produced so far, none of the families feature same-sex parents.
“Children watching Peppa Pig are at an impressionable age, and excluding same-sex families will teach them that only families with either a single parent or two parents of different sexes are normal.”

Some people welcomed the arrival of the show’s first same-sex characters, with one social media user writing: “No one’s talking abt [sic] for peppa pig now has two lesbian polar bears? I find it very sweet that peeps pig is lgbtq friendly.”
Another commented: “THERE ARE LESBIAN MOMS IN PEPPA PIG????? Adult shows struggle to do representation and peppa pig are just out here giving us lesbian polar bears???”
However, some people weren’t too impressed, with another commenting: “Hear that Peppa Pig now has same sex couples. They are literally pigs ffs [sic]. Seriously world, stop trying to tick boxes. It’s so dumb”.
A fourth simply wrote: “Ffs leave our f*****g kids alone.”
