Rick Astley joined the Blossoms on stage in an ‘awesome’ collaboration where fans said he ‘won’ Glastonbury.
The Never Gonna Give You Up singer, 57, wowed fans and got crowds pumping with his set on Saturday afternoon.
The ’80s pop singer sang a mixture of his own hits along with cover versions of AC/DC’s Highway To Hell and Harry Styles’ As It Was.
As if that wasn’t good enough, he later joined Stockport band The Blossoms on the newly named Woodsies Stage for an ‘awesome’ collaboration where they performed numerous hits by The Smiths, including Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, Panic and What Difference Does It Make?
It’s not the first time the singer and band have collaborated on The Smiths’ tracks.
Back in 2021, they played two special gigs together held at Manchester’s Royal Albert Hall and London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town.
Afterwards, the pop star took to Twitter to thank The Blossoms, as he tweeted: “I want to thank @BlossomsBand for an incredible experience at Glastonbury this weekend. Love you guys – Rick #glastonbury2023 @glastonbury.”
Viewers at home also enjoyed the ‘random’ pleasant surprise and took to social media to hail the collaboration as ‘pure magic’.
One fan tweeted: “Think Rick Astley and Blossoms doing the Smiths just won #Glasto. Fantastic,” while a second added: “Sir Rick Astley and The Blossoms have won #glastonbury2023”.
A third viewer wrote in agreement: “Rick Astley has just won Glastonbury .. that is all,” and some else echoed: “Rick Astley and Blossoms have won Glastonbury.”
Others were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed the ‘random’ collaboration. One person typed: “Rick Astley and Blossoms covering The Smiths is something I had no idea was possible and no clue I needed in my life, but I feel a much better person for it. That was awesome #Glastonbury23.”
Another person tweeted: “Something about rick Astley and blossoms forming a supergroup to purely cover the Smiths songs scratches an itch in my brain.”
And someone else said: “Rick Astley & Blossoms doing the songs of The Smiths at Glasto, f****** incredible, what a matchup they are.”
Another viewer mentioned: “Saw Rick Astley & Blossoms covering The Smiths at Albert Hall a couple of years ago and it’s genuinely up there with one of the best gigs I’ve been too. Hope they do another mini tour after the reception their Glastonbury set received.”
And a surprised viewer added: “Rick Astley and Blossoms on the Woodsies Stage performing The Smiths – the act that I never knew that I needed to see. Pure magic.”
