A Greek hotel has been hailed as the ‘new Maldives’ thanks to its affordable yet luxurious overwater bungalows.

While the Maldives are some of the most desirable holiday destinations in the world, the cluster of Southern Asian islands are notoriously expensive to get to, with flights from Manchester sitting in the region of over £1,000.

It also takes an average flying time of twenty-two hours to reach the Maldives, which is a stretch for even the most seasoned of travellers.

But luckily for us Brits, there’s a resort in the Greek island of Crete that holiday-goers are hailing as the ‘new Maldives’, and it costs a fraction of the price.

The adults-only Stella Island Luxury Resort & Spa has been described as ‘a Maldives experience in the Mediterranean sea’, thanks to its luxury overwater bungalows and its promise to pamper guests with a variety of facilities and services.

The hotel comes complete with five different restaurants, a giant swimming pool and state-of-the-art spa, all while being situated on the enviable northern coast of Crete.

But the real stars of the show are the overwater bungalows, which each feature their own private sunbathing decks overlooking the pool.

The website reads: “These Over Water Bungalows add an extra dimension to a holiday on Stella Island Luxury Resort: decorated with wood and glass, in tropical scenery, guests have direct access down from each sunbathing deck to the pool. The bathroom consist of a walk-in shower and double sinks.”

Those wanting to splash out for their holiday can also upgrade their bungalow to the Grand Over Water Bungalow with Jacuzzi, Island Villa Private Pool and Premium Swim Up.

And unlike many locations across the Maldives, guests don’t necessarily have to break the bank to enjoy a stay, with the cost being as low as £299 per night during off-peak periods.

Flights are also considerably cheaper – and quicker – than a trip to the Maldives, with airlines offering returns to Manchester for around £350.

Located just a stones-throw away from the hotel, there are a whole array of activities such as trekking, horse riding and scuba diving, making it the ideal spot for adventurers and sunbathers alike.
