From discarded food wrappers, personal belongings and brooms to rubber gloves and face masks — the winner of the UK’s messiest car competition has been announced.

The competition run by vehicle service provider ATS Euromaster, offered a £200 Amazon voucher for the proud winner of messy vehicles.

Out of all the shameless entrants, a woman from Essex has been crowned champion in the national competition which saw people send in photographs of the state their car interiors are in.

Lidy Winship, 60, was awarded the voucher to spend on Amazon, presented by ATS Euromaster for the competition which closed on June 11th.

She has described her car as a ‘graveyard for rubbish’ as she showed the inside of her Saab Estate.

Ms Winsip’s vehicle could be fairly considered a pigsty by many as a snap shows clutter piled so high, she is unable to take any passengers in the five-seater.

Over driving around actual people, Ms Winsip has given priority to a broomstick, a discarded computer keyboard, tools, clothes and other personal items.

She joked that her husband had told her she could win an award for the ‘untidiest car in Britain’, and then she actually did.

About her car, Ms Winsip said: “She is effectively known as the graveyard as she’s used as a general run around and a mobile tip!

“Whatever needs clearing up or has been carried somewhere to clean up or repair around the farm, it all gets thrown in her. My husband even has all the bad snacks and drinks in there too.

“When my husband loses tools, I always say it’s probably in the graveyard, so a frantic search begins for a much-needed tool, which creates more mess! Apparently, everything in her comes in handy at some point.

“It’s a mammoth task to clean her, and I have to give my husband a days’ notice at least!”

It was pretty close though, as other shameless individuals who entered the competition showed snaps of cars filled with Amazon boxes, discarded face masks, rubber gloves, piles of empty drinks cartons, blankets, papers, children’s toys, and brand new cleaning equipment — which obviously hadn’t even been used to do any cleaning!

The competition was designed to raise awareness of the risks of keeping a messy vehicle which can obstruct motorists’ ability to drive safely, lead to MOT failure and even a fine if police consider the driver’s view to be inhibited.

Whilst there is no specific fine for having a messy car interior, having a cluttered car can lead to you being slapped with a hefty fine and receiving three penalty points on your licence.

Paul Maynard from ATS Euromaster said: “Many drivers will admit that their cars aren’t squeaky clean, and it can be easy for them to build up with clutter.

“The messiest car competition highlighted the state of many drivers’ cars, and hopefully made them think about the dangers it could create.

“As well as potentially obscuring a driver’s view out of windows or mirrors, if the driver needs to brake sharply the loose items could move forward and possibly interfere with the vehicle pedals and steering.

“A messy interior can be classed as dangerous driving, and results in a £100 fine. Having an excessive mess of any sort can also cause MOT failure. If your car is really dirty, technicians can refuse to even conduct the MOT at all due to the tester not being able to assess testable items due to customer property within the vehicle.”
