Here are the baby names at risk of going extinct in the UK, as shortened versions of traditional names are being chosen in favour of their longer versions.
Times are changing and so are trending baby names. In recent years, girls and boys are less likely to be given traditional names and more likely to be given more modern and shortened versions of the names.
The days of being named after famous movie stars like Grace Kelly and Tom Selleck, or footballers like David Beckham, seem to have been replaced with something that’s a little shorter, more unusual and considered ‘cute’.
While ‘Ella’ and ‘Lily’ are popular amongst parents for girls, ‘Bobby’ and ‘Tommy’ have become more popular for boys. It seems the favoured classics are now on the verge of extinction.
Anna McEntee, from the life insurance team at Comparethemarket, said: “Choosing a baby name is a very personal and exciting decision for families.
“It’s fascinating to see baby name trends change over time, with old favourites like Lucy and Chloe falling out of fashion, and more unique names such as Nova gaining popularity.”
