UK to be plunged into freezing temperatures as Storm Carrie set to arrive this week

The UK will be plunged into freezing temperatures just before Christmas as Storm Carrie arrives from tomorrow. 

A so-called ‘snow bomb’ is reportedly being carried towards the UK by the approaching Storm Carrie, which is due to arrive on December 27th. This will be the third storm set to bring carnage so far this winter. 

According to reports, the storm could see up to one centimetre of snow settle within just one hour in the north.

Overnight frost is also expected from Tuesday onwards, with more unsettled weather including windy conditions and cold temperatures.

However, the Met Office has stressed that while the storm is guaranteed to bring temperatures plummeting, snow isn’t a definite, noting that if any falls over the festive period it will most likely be contained to hills in the north of the country.  

A Met Office spokesman said: “In general, cloud amounts will tend to reduce with time, with a corresponding increase in the risk of overnight fog and frost, which may be slow to clear by day in some areas.

“Towards the middle of the period, there is an increasing chance of more unsettled and windier weather affecting the UK, with rain, and perhaps snow, possible for some places.

“Temperatures will generally be near to below normal, perhaps rather cold in the south, feeling chilly where any fog persists, and locally mild in the north and northwest.”

This comes just weeks after Greater Manchester was subject to turbulent weather conditions by the arrival of Storms Arwen and Barra.

Storm Arwen left thousands of people in the North without power heating and hot water, with the Energy Networks Association (ENA) saying, as per The Independent, that as many as 4,025 homes were out of power at one given time.
