Wilko has announced that it will be welcoming four-legged companions into more than 200 of its stores for the first time.

The home and garden retailer made the announcement on social media earlier this week, saying it ‘understands that pets are more than just pets, they’re family’.

Their announcement reads: “That’s why we’ve decided to welcome pets in-store at 248 of our locations. We hope that shoppers will enjoy bringing their furry friends along with them.

“Please check for new signage at the entrance of your local store to see if they are participating.”

However, Wilko explained that only a select number of stores will be welcoming four-legged companions; in particular, those with their own on-street entrance and exit rather than those located in shopping centres that may not allow any animals.

New signs in the shop entrances will make it clear as to whether animals will be allowed in or not, and customers will be able to check with a member of staff if they’re still unsure.

All service and guide dogs will be welcome in all stores nationwide.

However, despite the UK being a famous pet-loving nation, reactions to Wilkos’ new policy have been mixed – while some have applauded the supermarket for its inclusivity, others have expressed their concerns over naughty dogs and those with allergies.

One concerned shopper commented: “My daughter is terrified of dogs, we now won’t be visiting Wilkos.”

Another pointed out: “It’s a nice gesture, but not everyone likes dogs, even well behaved ones… I can see this backfiring on Wilko when an incident occurs. Assistance dogs are one thing, but not all dogs!”

Though it has to be said, the majority of Wilko customers were overjoyed with the news, with many saying the presence of dogs and other pets will make their shopping experience more enjoyable.

One customer wrote: “This is fantastic! Because of the bad world we live in you can no longer tie dogs up outside.. well done Wilko!”
