A new Netflix series from the creator of The Stranger is set to start filming in Manchester early next year.

Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst are once again teaming up to adapt another one of Coben’s novels for Netflix, following on from the huge success of The Stranger.

The streaming service has a five year deal with the author, which in total will see fourteen of his books adapted for television – so far we’ve seen Safe, The Stranger, and The Woods.

The next offering is based on Coben’s bestselling novel Stay Close and it sounds just as gripping as the previous series, as it follows three characters whose dark secrets resurface and set off a chain of events which threaten to destroy their lives.

It will star Cush Jumbo (Deadwater Fell), James Nesbitt (The Missing), and Richard Armitage (The Stranger), with Mancunian producer Nicola Shindler joining up with writer Danny Brocklehurst to help tell the story.

According to the synopsis of the show: “Three people living comfortable lives each conceal dark secrets that even the closest to them would never suspect; Megan (Jumbo), a working mother of three; Ray (Armitage), the once promising documentary photographer, now stuck in a dead-end job pandering to celebrity-obsessed rich kids, and Broome (Nesbitt), a detective who’s unable to let go of a missing person’s cold case.

“Lorraine (Parish), an old friend from Megan’s past, delivers some shocking news which will impact on all three characters. As the past comes back to haunt them, threatening to ruin their lives and the lives of those around them, what will be their next move?”

Actor Richard Armitage said: “I can’t wait to return to Manchester to work with Nicola, Danny, Harlan and the team again. I love Harlan’s style and this plot and character will be brilliantly challenging.

“At a time when we have remained apart; ‘Stay Close’ promises to break all the rules.”

Production is set to begin in early 2021 across Manchester and the North West, although there’s currently no scheduled premiere date for the series.
