Blackpool’s annual illuminations will be switched-on next month and a special guest pop-star has been confirmed to attend.
As we prepare for darker nights and a season of illuminations, Blackpool bosses have now confirmed the pop star who will attend their main event of the annual lights switch-on.
Fresh from her appearances on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage and at Latitude Festival, pop artist Sophie Ellis-Bextor will be the special guest to do the honours on the evening of Friday, September 1st.
The multi-platinum selling singer, known for her chart hits Murder On The Dancefloor and Take Me Home, will also headline the Tower Festival Headland for one big celebratory event.
The seaside town’s spectacular display will feature a programme of free entertainment which will start with a colourful float parade featuring the stars of Nickelodeon, the world’s favourite children’s TV channel.
The illuminations will run for an extended period again this year, after previous success, right up until January 1st, 2024.
Ellis-Bextor said: “I’m so excited to be coming back to Blackpool to perform a few of my favourite tracks. I can’t wait to see you all there.”
Council leader Lynn Williams said she was ‘thrilled’ to make the announcement. “Sophie is a pop phenomenon with a fabulous recording career and someone who captured the hearts of the public during lockdown. We can’t wait to see her light up Blackpool.”
The whole night, which is free to access, is due to begin around 7pm, with the float parade scheduled to start around 7.30pm. The main celebrations on the Tower Festival Headland will take place between 8pm and 9.30pm.
